Wandarra Homestead: A Family Getaway in Mudgee

If you’re after a family escape that isn’t a resort full of strangers, Wandarra Homestead, between Mudgee & Rylstone, might be exactly what you’re looking for. Set on 25 private acres in Mudgee wine country, this exclusive-use property is booked by one group at a time, meaning it’s just your family, the paddocks, and total quiet.

Wandarra Homestead is conveniently located between Mudgee and Rylstone, less than 20 minutes from each town and about 3 hours from Sydney. Rylstone itself is a charming, historic village on the Cudgegong River, dating back to the 1840s, so there’s plenty to explore nearby beyond the homestead itself.

  • Four beautifully styled bedrooms — three king rooms and one queen, all with hotel-quality linen, sleeping up to 8 guests
  • Three designer bathrooms with rain showers and premium toiletries
  • Two living areas, one with sweeping views and one with an open fireplace for cooler nights
  • A fully equipped kitchen, including a gas stove, Nespresso machine and full cookware, ideal for cooking a big family meal together
  • A wraparound verandah and outdoor dining area, with a gas BBQ and screened dining space
  • An outdoor fire pit, complete with firewood included, perfect for roasting marshmallows with the kids once the sun goes down
  • Grandma’s Tipsy, a private underground speakeasy bar tucked beneath a hatch
  • 25 private acres, fully fenced, with no shared spaces or other guests

One of the best parts of staying at Wandarra is just how much wildlife wanders through the property. Over our stay we spotted cows grazing in the neighbouring paddocks, birds all through the grounds, kangaroos hopping past in the early morning and evening, and even a few hares darting through the grass. For kids who don’t get much exposure to farm and native wildlife, it’s a highlight of the stay.

While Wandarra is styled as a luxury retreat, it’s well-suited to family groups, or those travelling with extended family:

  • Exclusive use means young kids have the run of the property without worrying about other guests
  • The fenced paddock is great for letting dogs (and energetic kids) roam safely outdoors
  • Two living areas give families room to spread out, whether that’s a quiet reading nook or a space for the kids to play while the adults relax by the fire
  • The fire pit is an easy, low-effort way to end the day together, marshmallows included, and there’s no need to bring your own firewood
  • Late Sunday checkout takes the pressure off packing up with tired children in tow
  • Year-round comfort with reverse-cycle air conditioning, an open fireplace, ceiling fans and electric blankets means the property is comfortable whatever the season
  • There are so many great board games and outdoor games for the whole family plus an outdoor swing

Alongside the property itself, we were treated to a breakfast hamper during our stay, a lovely touch that meant one less thing to think about on our first morning. Paired with the included firewood for the fire pit, it’s clear a lot of thought has gone into making the stay feel effortless from the moment you arrive.
