Craving seafood but can’t face the drive to the coast? You don’t need to. Western Sydney is loaded with fresh fish, crispy chips and messy seafood boils the kids will love. Here are our favourite spots, from old-school takeaways to full blown feasts.
Fish Fish – Penrith
This is your classic local chippy, done properly. The owners grew up in their family’s fish and chip shop, and the spot took over from Sea Tucker, which was a Penrith seafood favourite for around 30 years. Locals rate the battered barramundi and the homemade-style sweet potato scallops. Got a coeliac in the family? They run a dedicated gluten free menu every Wednesday and Thursday, covering battered fish, calamari, chips and scallops. Note that they’re closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Calli’s Grill – St Marys
Calli’s brings American soul food to the West, and the Cajun seafood boil is the star. The Hot Cheeto corn ribs are a crowd favourite on the side, and non-seafood eaters are covered with wings and beef plates.

Kickin’Inn – Penrith
Plates? Cutlery? Not here. You eat straight from the seafood bag with your hands, and they hand out bibs and gloves (cutlery if you ask). The kids will think it’s the best dinner ever. Every Sydney store is halal certified, and spice levels run from lemon pepper with no chilli right up to Extra Kickin’. Kids can score a free meal from a special menu on select days, and there are high chairs and a kids’ menu. Pack a spare top for the little ones. You’ll thank us.

Ocean Treasure Asian Dining – Club Blacktown
This is a spot for yum cha and live seafood. It’s Club Blacktown’s Cantonese restaurant, serving live and fresh seafood, Hong Kong BBQ, yum cha and dim sum, and it’s run by award winning Chef Stevenson. Aquarius is a proper sit-down seafood lunch with a view. It sits on the banks of the Georges River, surrounded by parkland, and you can dine inside or on the elevated terrace overlooking the water. Hot and cold seafood platters are the signature, and the menu also has meat dishes and chargrilled fresh fish for non seafood eaters. First visit? Go the seafood platter. It’s also a great pick for big family celebrations because they take large group and function bookings. Note that they’re closed on Mondays.
