Penrith Lakes Is Getting a $5 Million Family Fishing Park
The NSW Government has announced a $5 million proposal to create a new fishing park at Penrith Lakes. Two lakes that are currently closed to the public will become a family-friendly fishing destination, giving Western Sydney families, beginners and experienced anglers a new place to cast a line.

The Penrith Lakes Fishing Park will open two artificial lakes within the Penrith Lakes complex to recreational fishing once the wider parklands transformation is complete, expected in 2028.
Planning and design work is underway. The goal is a dedicated, land-based fishing spot where families can fish safely without needing a boat or heading out onto an ocean rock platform.

The announcement on 17 October coincided with Gone Fishing Weekend. More than 200 Australian Bass were released into the lakes to kick off a fish stocking program. Bass are a popular native sportfish known for hard strikes and a strong fight, making them a fun catch for first-timers and seasoned anglers alike.
What’s planned
- Walking tracks to and around both lakes, with car parks beside each one
- Fishing platforms and accessible ramps so people of all abilities can get close to the water
- Fish-cleaning tables and dedicated bins for fishing waste like old line and hooks
- Seating, picnic tables, picnic areas and toilets
- An ongoing stocking program to build up native fish populations
There’s currently no public access to either lake, so the project will also open up new park space for Western Sydney.
It follows the success of Penrith Beach, which has welcomed almost 450,000 visitors since opening in December 2023.

Interim Chair of the NSW Recreational Fishing Peak Body, Greg Seeto, said: “The Penrith Lakes Fishing Park has the potential to become a fantastic fishing destination for Western Sydney, giving families a safe and accessible place to get outdoors and enjoy fishing.“Creating more quality fishing opportunities close to where people live is an important part of making recreational fishing more accessible and encouraging greater participation.”He added that the peak body looked forward to working with the NSW Government and the fishing community to deliver better fishing experiences across the state.
