NSW Festival of Steam

Join the NSW Rail Museum and Wollondilly Shire Council for a memorable weekend as Thirlmere welcomes back the annual Festival of Steam on 17-18 May.

Enjoy steam train rides featuring a line-up of iconic locomotives, explore vintage traction engines, admire classic cars, and take in the annual street parade and live entertainment throughout the day.

Step back in time and explore the art, entertainment, and engineering of the past. Get hands-on with history as you climb into the driver’s cab of the newly restored steam locomotive 2705, watch live demonstrations of traditional trades, see a 104-year-old coal grab crane spring to life, or try your hand at shovelling coal like a fireman.

There’s even more to discover! Throughout the town of Thirlmere, you’ll find roving performers, science experiments for kids, and plenty of surprises around every corner. Across the weekend, explore market stalls, a street parade, live performances, carnival rides, a vintage car display, and more!

And, this year, the festivities continue into the evening. Stick around after dark for night steam train rides, family-friendly games and activities, fire dancers, a spectacular fireworks display, and more!

Festival entry is free for general festival activities, with tickets for the NSW Rail Museum entry starting from just $5 kids and $15 for adults.
