Penrith Beach Returns for the Summer Season
Penrith Beach is officially back for summer, giving Western Sydney families an easy way to cool off without driving all the way to the coast. This man-made beach sits along Castlereagh Road in Penrith and has become a favourite warm-weather hangout thanks to its calm water, big sandy stretch and relaxed vibe. It’s had some upgrades recently, making it more accessible and convenient for families.
What You’ll Find at Penrith Beach
The swimming area is supervised by Surf Life Saving NSW during opening hours, creating a safe environment for families. The water is calm with no waves, which makes it ideal for younger kids or anyone still finding their confidence. This summer, Penrith Beach is open longer — 7am to 7pm on hot days — making early swims and after-work cool-offs way easier. The beach has also had a fresh round of upgrades thanks to government funding, including new shaded seating, outdoor showers, and more open space for picnics, sand play and relaxing by the water.
You’ll still find all the handy essentials too: accessible toilets and change rooms, plenty of parking, and an access mat that goes right down to the water for prams and wheelchairs. Depending on the day, you might spot a food truck or two, especially during busy periods.
How to Get There and Where to Park
You’ll find Penrith Beach on 1454 Castlereagh Rd, Castlereagh. At the moment, public transport doesn’t run directly to the entrance, and there are no safe pedestrian or cycling routes right to the beach, so driving is the easiest option. Parking is free and available on site, but it fills up quickly on hot days or during school holidays, so arriving early is your best bet for a smooth start to your visit.
Why Families Love It
For many of us in Western Sydney, Penrith Beach is the closest we get to a “local beach.” It’s gentle, easy, and doesn’t require the long drives or the stress of coastal crowds. Kids get to swim in calm water, build sandcastles, and run around freely while parents can relax knowing the environment is supervised and contained.
To keep everyone safe, Surf Life Saving NSW lifeguards will be on the beach every day. They’ll also be running free water-safety sessions, learn-to-swim activities, junior lifesaver workshops, and even quick skin check pop-ups while you’re there.
Planning Your Visit
Because the beach is intentionally kept simple, packing well makes all the difference. Bring shade — whether it’s an umbrella or a pop-up tent — as well as snacks, lunch, ice water, and lots of sunscreen. Towels, hats and a little fold-up wagon can also make life easier if you have younger ones. The vibe is very “set up for the day,” so think picnic style rather than surf club café.
Before you head out, it’s worth checking water-quality updates, especially after heavy rain. The beach is tested regularly and is usually in great condition, but it’s always good to double-check. If you’re visiting with toddlers, stay close to the shore; if you have older kids, remind them to stick within the patrolled zone
