Our Relaxing and Fun-Filled Family Escape to Fiji
Why Fiji Should Be Your Next Family Holiday
Looking for a family getaway that ticks all the boxes? Warm weather, happy kids, friendly locals, and minimal stress? We’ve just come back from a week in Fiji with the kids and honestly, it was everything we needed and more.
From the warm Bula hospitality to the easy direct flights and activities that kept the whole family entertained, here’s why Fiji is the perfect holiday for your family.
Who we booked with – and how they made it so easy
If the idea of planning a family holiday feels overwhelming, we highly recommend using My Fiji. We gave them our budget and preferred dates, and they did the rest—flights, resort, transfers, experiences. It was all just too easy.
One of the best parts? We got access to a VIP fast-track lane at Nadi Airport on arrival and departure. Absolute heaven when you’ve got tired kids and just want to get through customs quickly!
Their rates were super competitive, and the whole experience felt really smooth from start to finish.
Where we stayed: Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort
We stayed at the Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort on Denarau Island. We shared a twin room (2 adults, 2 kids), but if your budget allows, we’d recommend booking 2-bedroom villas at the Sheraton Denarau Villas next door for more space.
There are four different pools to choose from and plenty of kids’ activities throughout the day, like water aerobics and soccer volleyball—the kids were entertained non-stop. Most evenings, we sat poolside with table service while the kids played in the water. Bliss.
We also treated ourselves to a massage at the Westin next door—genuinely the best massage we’ve ever had. Worth every cent!
Our favOURITE experience: Thermal Hot Springs & Mud Pool
If you do just one day trip or activity outside the resort—make it this. We booked the Best of Nadi Highlights Tour through Fiji Valentine Tours, and it was easily the most memorable part of our trip.
The day starts at Fiji’s largest Hindu temple, known for its incredible architecture and vibrant colours—a great way to soak in some local culture. From there, we stopped by a handicraft shop where there was a chance to browse some beautiful Fijian carvings, jewellery, and handmade souvenirs.
Next up was Namaka Market, a buzzing local produce market where we met friendly vendors, sampled fresh tropical fruits, and even got to try kava! (Don’t worry—it’s family-friendly and part of the local tradition.)
We then took a guided walking tour of Viseisei Village, one of Fiji’s oldest known settlements, where we learned about its rich history and daily village life.
The tour continued at the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, which is absolutely stunning and home to around 2,000 varieties of orchids—perfect for a peaceful stroll through lush tropical gardens.
To top it all off, we finished at the famous Sabeto Mud Pool Hot Springs – the highlight of our whole trip – where the kids enjoyed a play in the mud (they loved it!) and we soaked in the warm, mineral-rich pools. There’s even the option to get a massage on site—super affordable and honestly one of the most relaxing parts of the whole trip.
Fijian hospitality is something else
The people in Fiji are truly what makes this place so special. Everyone was so friendly, warm, and genuine—especially with the kids.
On our daughter Millie’s birthday, the resort staff sang her “Happy Birthday” in beautiful harmony. It gave us goosebumps!
Fijian staff are so genuine and work very hard to make all their guests happy, so if you’re heading over bringing gifts like stationery, Aussie snacks, or small toys for the staff and local kids. And if you can tip—do. They truly go above and beyond.
Handy Tips for Fiji with Kids
- Jump on the Bula Bus – an easy hop-on, hop-off ride around Denarau Island and Port Denarau.
- Pack plenty of snacks – options at the resort shops can be limited and pricey.
- Insect repellent & bite cream – essential, especially for the evenings.
- Reef shoes – great for protecting little feet at the beach or during outdoor activities.
- Bring gifts – things like lollies, colouring books, pencils, and stickers are always appreciated by locals.
- Use the free kids club – the Sheraton offers a kids club and there’s also a nanny service available if you want a bit of grown-up time.
Would we go back? 100% yes.
Fiji is ideal for families. The flight from Sydney is only 4–5 hours, and the resort transfer from the airport takes around 30 minutes. Everything feels easy once you’re there, and the pace of life is just what you need when you’re trying to switch off and unwind.
Whether you want to relax poolside while the kids make new friends, or explore the culture and natural beauty of Fiji, this place has something for everyone.
Already dreaming of going back? So are we.
