The Sheep Detectives at Hoyts
There are some things streaming at home just cannot replicate. The big screen. The surround sound. The collective laugh of a cinema full of kids when something unexpected happens. No amount of couch comfort comes close and The Sheep Detectives reminded us exactly why a cinema trip is still one of the best family days out.
We headed to Hoyts, loaded up at the candy bar first and settled in for what turned out to be one of the most entertaining family films we’ve seen in a long time.
What It’s About
George Hardy is a shepherd who reads murder mystery novels aloud to his sheep every night, assuming they can’t possibly understand. When he’s found dead under mysterious circumstances, the sheep decide they have no choice but to solve the case themselves — even if it means leaving their meadow for the very first time.
The Cast Will Surprise You
This is not your average animated film voice cast. Hugh Jackman leads as George, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein, Emma Thompson and Rhys Darby among the cast.
The Kids Loved It
The humour works on two levels — enough silliness to keep the little ones entertained and enough wit to keep the adults laughing. Critics have described it as a charming, smart and heartfelt whodunnit, drawing comparisons to family classics like Babe. There’s also a surprisingly tender thread about loss and community. One that works for everyone in the family.
