Wistaria Gardens
Wistaria Gardens is a two-hectare heritage garden tucked inside Parramatta Park, best known for its cascading purple wisteria blooms each spring. It’s a quieter, less crowded alternative to Sydney’s more famous garden spots, and it’s completely free to visit.
A Bit of History
The gardens date back to 1906, originally built as the residence for the Medical Superintendent of the Parramatta Lunatic Asylum. The very first wisteria cuttings were brought to Australia from Japan in 1907. Landscape features still include the original Japanese tori gates, classical urns and lych gates at the entrances, alongside Chinese and Japanese wisteria, flowering peach and almond trees, and English elms lining the pathways.
What to Expect
- Open lawns for picnics and play, ideal for letting kids run around while the adults set up a picnic rug
- Flower-lined pathways, with pink and white blooms making for great photos most of the year
- A small bridge over a calm stream, a popular spot for family photos
- The wisteria in full bloom, typically peaking in spring, when the flowers hang down like a curtain
Weekend in Wistaria (September Event)
Each September, the gardens host Weekend in Wistaria, a two-day festival run in partnership with RiverFest. Expect seasonal flower displays, nature play, eco-inspired art activities and environmental discovery sessions for kids, alongside the garden’s usual spring bloom.
Good to Know Before You Visit
- The gardens are open to pedestrians 24 hours a day, seven days a week
- Parking is limited nearby within Parramatta Park, so public transport is recommended, particularly during the spring bloom or festival weekends when it gets busier
- Entry is via Byrnes Avenue, near the Picnic Ground inside Parramatta Park
- There are no dedicated facilities (toilets, cafes) directly within the gardens themselves, so it’s worth planning around the wider Parramatta Park amenities

Access to Wistaria Gardens is via Parramatta Park, entering through Byrnes Avenue near the Picnic Ground. Limited parking is available within the park, so allow extra time if driving, or consider public transport instead.
